This is your brain on music…

Now that we’ve completed This is Your Brain on Music, let’s talk a little bit about it! I’m expecting you to reference this text in your assignments when appropriate as we continue through the term so that you can keep applying the vast ideas that Levitin touches on in his book.

This text contains a lot of information about music and the brain, but also key introductory information about musical terms, studies on the brain’s resiliency, insight into what forms musical preferences and why, and even how music might provide a crucial evolutionary function in our species!

In this post, spend some time reflecting on this text while it’s still fresh in your mind. Consider the following questions as jumping-off points for you…

What surprised you as you were reading? What interested you? Any parts that stuck with you, or that you found yourself discussing with someone else in your life?

Were you familiar with the musical terminology that Levitin discusses before? Did this text deepen your understanding of these terms? Do you feel more comfortable using these terms yourself, now?

Hopefully writing about this text will be a good starting point for conducting some of your own research and doing our writing assignment about genre this week! Be sure to leave 3 comments on your peers’ posts to keep the conversation going.
